Hau‘oli Mau Loa Foundation has funding relationships with six different organizations in Hawai‘i. The length of our relationship with these organizations varies from more than ten years to just a few years. The relationships were all established during the period before the Foundation was fully funded. Each of these partner organizations contributes, in very different ways, to the Foundation’s mission. Aloha Harvest Based in Honolulu, Hawai`i, Aloha Harvest is a nonprofit organization that gathers quality donated food and delivers it free of charge to over 130 social service organizations who feed more than 41,180 hungry and homeless individuals every month. The approach is a “green,” common-sense and cost-effective way of taking food from places of abundance to where it is needed. Picking up and delivering food the same day is an efficient system that keeps costs down and reduces hunger on the streets. No food warehouse expense is incurred, and all donated food, which meets strict donation guidelines, is given to charitable agencies in an equitable manner on a rotating basis.
Hale Kipa For 40 years, Hale Kipa has been "the House of Friendliness" to thousands of Hawaii's runaways and homeless youth who have needed a place to stay and someone to talk to while they work out their problems. During this time, Hale Kipa has provided shelter and other services to more than 36,000 youth.
Today, Hale Kipa is very much involved in the efforts of the Hawaii Youth Services Network, Partners in Care, Weed and Seed, Foster Care Initiatives and other partnerships. Its statewide services are accredited through the Council on Accreditation. Hale Kipa also provides practicum placement for students. Hale Kipa is currently licensed as a child-placing agency by the Department of Human Services and maintains approximately 20 private foster homes.
Hawai`i Nature Center
Since its humble beginnings in Makiki Valley in 1981, the Hawai`i Nature Center, a 501c(3) organization, has touched the lives of over three-quarters of a million children, teachers, families and visitors. The organization continues to fulfill an important educational and conservation purpose: "to foster awareness, appreciation and understanding of the environment by and for the people of Hawai`i, and to encourage wise stewardship of the islands in the future." The legacy of the Nature Center's in-the-field programs is an environmentally literate public, whose understanding of local natural and cultural history, environmental and sustainability issues are grounded in an inspired sense of place. People at all stages of life participate in the Nature Center's curriculum-based experiential programs, expert-led seminars and hikes and volunteer habitat restoration projects. The programs engender a life-long appreciation, understanding and value for our practice of stewardship. Ho‘āla School Ho`āla School is an independent, non-sectarian, grades K-12 school located in Wahiawa, Hawai`i. Ho`āla currently serves students and families representative of the multi-cultural and socio-economically diverse population of Hawai`i. Founded twenty-four years ago by Sister Joan Madden and a group of teachers and parents, Ho`āla School is licensed by the Hawai`i Council of private schools, is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Coleges (WASC) and is a semi-finalist National Schools of Character recipient. The mission of Ho`āla School is to provide students with a safe and stimulating environment that encourages the development of mutual respect, sense of belonging and a passion for learning. The Foundation's support of Ho`āla School has largely been to strengthen the school infrastructure and to ensure students who need financial assistance have access to it. Kōke‘e Discovery Center Association, Inc.
The Kōke‘e Discovery Center Association Inc. (KDCAI) is an organization that provides support to the Kōke‘e Discovery Center on the island of Kaua‘i. The organization assists the State of Hawai‘i Department of Education in maintaining and preserving the Kōke‘e Discovery Center’s facilities so that it can be enjoyed by the children of Hawai‘i and serve as a place of learning and exploration. KDCAI may provide support or raise funds for the Discovery Center’s staffing, supplies, equipment, and general maintenance. KDCAI also works to provide volunteers who perform regular maintenance at the Discovery Center. Because the costs related to transporting students is often a barrier to participating in outdoor education programs, KDCAI helps to subsidize bus transportation so that local school children are able to access this precious educational site in the natural environment of Kōke‘e. Students learn firsthand about the native forest ecosystem of Northwest Kaua‘i, participate in character building activities, and assist in service learning projects. Storybook Theatre
The Storybook Theatre of Hawai`i creates, produces, and distributes educational programs for children. These innovative programs are offered at Storybook’s beautiful facility in Hanapēpē, Kaua`i and are also broadcasted on television throughout Hawai`i and Polynesia, as well as to several cities in the continental United States. Each program focuses on building stronger families and local communities through increased literacy, peacemaking skills, drug abuse prevention, balance in the environment, recycling and personal character development through the arts. The organization is dedicated to addressing an important need of young children: the need to hear good stories told in creative ways. Storybook Theatre of Hawai`i was founded in 1979 in Honolulu, Hawai`i and moved its base of operations to the island of Kaua`i in 1989. Professional artists and educators have created more than 50 live touring productions and hundreds of broadcast quality television programs.
In 1995, Storybook was able to save a nationally registered historic site – the Sun Ke Heong / Obatake Building in Hanapēpē, Kaua`i. The rehabilitation of the property has been dedicated to former United States Senator Spark M. Matsunaga, a champion for peace and a real hometown hero from Kaua`i.
