FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I apply to the Foundation for funding?

Hau`oli Mau Loa Foundation does not currently accept unsolicited proposals, and we are uncertain as to when this might change.  We recognize the substantial amount of time and resources required to prepare and submit a grant proposal and believe that no organization should waste valuable time submitting a proposal that we will not be able to consider.

Why isn’t the Foundation accepting proposals?
The Foundation has only recently received the full bequest from its benefactor and is at a learning stage in its development.  Over time we will expand our grantmaking strategies, in ways that are consistent with our mission and our values.

Who is the Foundation currently funding?
Hau`oli Mau Loa Foundation provides funding to organizations that fall into five program areas:  Environment, First Generation Partners, Hope for Kids, Housing Projects and Humanitarian Relief.  Please read our Grantmaking Guidelines for additional details and Our Partners for a complete list of the organizations with whom we are currently working.

Why is the Foundation only now hiring staff when it’s been around for nearly 20 years?
We have only recently received the full bequest from our benefactor.

Who was the benefactor?
Hau`oli Mau Loa Foundation was founded by Helga Glaesel-Hollenback who, in her words,  “found great happiness on the islands of Hawai`i” and wished “to return the generosity of the islands.” Originally from Germany, she moved to the United States and established a home in Honolulu.  Helga was actively involved in Hau`oli Mau Loa Foundation until her passing in 1997.

What does the name of the foundation mean and where did that name come from?
In Hawaiian, Hau`oli Mau Loa means “eternal happiness.”  Helga Glaesel-Hollenback selected the name to reflect her hopes for the Foundation's impact.

Why were the current board members selected?
Hau`oli Mau Loa Foundation’s current board members  knew the Foundation’s benefactor well and worked with her on Foundation related matters.

What is the Foundation’s geographic service area?
The Foundation concentrates its giving in Hawai`i, with some funding provided to organizations outside the state.
