DIRECTORS

There are currently two members serving on the Foundation’s Board of Directors:

HANS BERTRAM-NOTHNAGEL

Hans Bertram-Nothnagel has served on the Foundation's Board since its inception in 1990.  Until her death in 1997, he did so together with Helga Glaesel-Hollenback, the Foundation’s benefactor, and from the very beginning has helped to realize Helga's vision for the Foundation's work and its future.  Based on that experience, Hans observes, "Helga's focus on the results she wanted to achieve through the Foundation's grantmaking, combined with her warmth and humanity, have set high standards for the Foundation, that we strive to live up to."

Born in Munich, Germany, Hans received a Baccalaureate in 1963 from Altes Gymnasium (Bremen, Germany), a Rechtsreferendar in 1968 from Bayerische-Julius-Maximilian-Universität (Würzburg, Germany), an Assessor in 1971 from the Ministry of Law (Bavaria, Germany) and an LL.M. in 1973 from the University of California at Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law.   From 1973 until his retirement at the end of 2008, Hans practiced with the law firm of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, New York, New York, as a member of the firm’s Finance Group and a founding partner of the firm’s Frankfurt office.

WAYNE M. PITLUCK

Wayne M. Pitluck has served on the Foundation's Board since 1997.  In addition to serving as the attorney of the benefactor, Wayne worked directly with her and Hans in implementing the Foundation’s activities.   As a thirty-plus year Hawai`i resident, Wayne brings understanding about and respect for conditions, issues, culture and traditions in Hawai`i that, in accordance with the wishes of the benefactor, have been, and will continue to be, important in carrying out the Foundation’s grantmaking in Hawai`i.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Wayne attended Stanford University receiving a Baccalaureate degree in 1961, and received his LL.B. in 1964 from the Hastings College of Law at the University of California.  He was the founding partner of the law firm Pitluck Kido Stone & Aipa, LLP, Honolulu, Hawai`i, at which he practiced until he retired in 2009.

Says Wayne about his service on the board, “I was fortunate to have experienced the true aloha spirit of our benefactor during her life, and I admire and share her love and appreciation for these wonderful islands. I consider it to be both a privilege and a significant responsibility to be a participant in the implementation of her vision for the Foundation."
